Frequently asked questions

  1. How Much does it cost to hire a bagpiper?

It depends on the piper, experience level and the event. Typically the cost is between $150-$300 for a 30 min performance. Travel costs may be additional. A Funeral is likely to be a flat fee. Memorials and funerals for first responders, law enforcement and veterans may be less.

  2. Can I request my favorite song on bagpipes?

Maybe. If it’s a song that fits on bagpipes and piper is willing to learn it if they don’t already know it.

  3. What Key are Bagpipes in?

The Great Highland Bagpipes typically play in a mixolydian scale that sounds closest to the key of B-flat major. However, due to their unique scale and tuning, the actual pitch of the notes can vary, and they often don’t align precisely with concert pitch. the Scottish smallpipes and Border pipes are often tuned to keys like A (most common), C, or D, and their scale and tuning can more closely align with standard musical keys.
Uilleann pipes in concert pitch D can comfortably play tunes in D major, G major, and their relative minors (B minor, E minor), as well as in modes like A Mixolydian or E Dorian. Uilleann flat set pipes can also come in c#, c, or B#.

  4. Do bagpipers need breaks?

Yes! its a tough instrument to be blowing for long periods of time. give your piper a break when they need it.

  5. does wyoming weather affect the bagpipes?

yes. unfortunately the bagpipes are from a country where the average relative humidity is constantly above 75%. lack of humidity, high altitude, and big temperature swings in wyoming make it more difficult to play the bagpipes and can greatly affect the reeds and pipes (sometimes even causing cracks in the pipes). bagpipes are typically made of wood and the reeds made of cane. These materials are susceptible to the environment.

  6. What are the most common tunes played on the bagpipes?

There are hundreds of tunes played on the bagpipes, but the most common tunes on great highland bagpipes are; scotland the brave, wings, rowan tree, amazing grace, the skye boat song, highland cathedral, flowers of the forest, highland laddie and more.
